Yes absolutely no problem. It's called MNP for Mobile Number Portability and is free.

It's actually - possibly - better than free. I get a slightly better deal from Peoples (10% more minutes thrown in) because I ported a number in. I suppose the point is that they know for a fact that they've 'stolen' me from a competitor, rather than being a new phone customer altogether...
