cheap bars?

Hey, just arrived in HK and having a great time. Went to LKF the other night but the bars seemed ridiculously expensive. Like £4 for a shot and £5 for a beer, minimum. Did I just keep going into the expensive bars or is that how it is in HK???

I'm on a student budget so I can't really keep that up. Also went to Wan Chai but the place has hundreds of prostitutes, half of which look like children. Is that the same for all of wan chai (I was around joe bananas i think)?

Some advice/opinions would be really great. Thanks.

Plenty of places have beers from $25 up during happy hour (up to 9pm generally) after that, you're looking at $45 up. If you want the posey bars and clubs then $65 up is normal, but places like the Hong Kong Brew House, Bulldogs, etc. have beer under $50 a pint all night. Plenty of hard-up types buy their beer in 7-11, particularly on weekends where many people spill out of the bars into the street anyway so you don't actually need to go into any bars...

Asian girls look younger than western ones. Be careful about prejudging who are pros and who are amateurs (and who are in a sort of grey area in between). My guess is that the average age of Wanchai pros is about 26-27. Wanchai is a complete mix of "normal" bars and brothels masquerading as bars. Brothels come in two basic forms: the "curtain bars" with people outside encouraging you to come in for "just one beer" which have a fairly fixed staff on the payroll, and bars which house freelance girls working on commission only (this includes places like Fenwick, Neptune, etc.). It's reasonably obvious which type is which.

let's not forget the $12 drink

there's one place in lkf called haha (opposite to lux and c club). it's only $12 for standard drinks from mon to fri, from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. there are places in tst and prince edwards offering cheap drinks and it's really local, for the dice and other local drinking games maybe

There are also all you can drink nights at certain places. Check out www.hkclubbing.com . I think Tribeca does them sometimes too.

Thanks for all the quick replies. Just to clarify, I'm not looking to pick up any prostitues, no matter how old. lol.

I'm pretty surprised then by the cost of drinking, especially given the relatively cheap prices of everything else in HK. 7/11 sounds like a plan to get the night started

I'm interested to hear about the all you can drink bars. Is it just local beer or are we talking spirits etc? Any good bars with these offers that people know of?

Thanks.
