Why not try the English Speaking Members Department of the YWCA.

It is not a church i.e. they are not all about pushing christianity on you...just providing courses.

www.esmdywca.org.hk

They run a huge number of english-speaking courses (fitness, language, cookery, arts/crafts, sightseeing, best places to shop etc) and events - you will meet a lot of other expat females - mainly wives and girlfriends of men who are working here.

They run one 'course' which is all about getting to know HK and is aimed at newcomers. I went on the junk trip which forms part of this course and met a very friendly, easy-going, down to earth bunch of girls and their partners.

Good luck.

Thanx ct1

Thanks for the info ct1...
I hope courtney finds what she is looking for?
I may try it out myself as i have to admit most of the "Ladies" i have met since being here have been very up themselves with a very elitist attitude!
Not all but a huge majority...
The last country i was in was totally different and though there were some snobby peeps
Most were truly nice people.. i have so many people i would call TRUE friends from there and thought it would be easier coming to a developed country.. but i think it is such a vast place it is easy to get lost
Anyhoo.. sorry for the moan.. hahhahah

K.S. - ha ha. you read between the lines in my message then. agree there are some snobby elitist types here in HK but as mentioned I think you will find the lot at the YWCA a lot more down to earth. Enjoy.

There's also the Helena May Woman's institute, which also has the advantage of a decent (but small) library and a place for tea in a central location (next to the peak tram stop)

Hi There

I agree with ct1 about the YWCA. I joined last May and within a couple of weeks I had various lunch and evening dates with people I had met there.
The ' At Home' course is fantastic...

I went on a day visit for lunch with a tour around the Helena May club and thought it a bit too 'stuffy'. Just a personal opinion.....

Good luck and ENJOY !!

Helena May isn't the liveliest of places but it's a lovely old buildilng - Margot Fonteyn took ballet classes in the school in the basement. And there's the last scent of a bygone era still remaining in the club that I find fascinating, like a half glimpse into a lost way of life. I wouldn't make it my only club, but its a fascainating place to check out as an additon to other activities.
