Salary to expect in HK (moving from SG)

Hi all,
I am a region IT consultant from singapore and my company has seriously asked me to consider relocating to HK.
Currently:
SGD 120K - take home pay PA
SGD 35K - CPF contribution (20% from me + 13% from employer)

So an annual package of about SGD155K and I pay about 10K in taxes. My wife has an annual package of about SGD30K. Wife is definitely coming along, so she will have to quit her job.

Based on the above, is a HKD 850K annual package(includes any tax benefit + "CPF" similar contribution from employer) but excluding housing allowance reasonable? If not should I ask for more or less? I am clueless on the pay scale in HK but I am guessing that it should be more as the cost of living is higher.

A few other questions:
1) Will my wife who will be on dependent's VISA be able to look for work in HK?
2) Housing wise I am looking at service apartments as an option for a start. Will HKD 10K a month be sufficient for a 1 bedroom apartment in town and near MTR? If not what will be a reasonable housing allowance?
3) Any recommendation on reliable relocation agencies that I can talk to for advise?
4) Have I left anything out in my considerations?

Thanks in advance for your help and advise.

Cheers,
Porky .....

>> 1) Will my wife who will be on dependent's VISA be able to look for work in HK?

She will have to apply for permission to work. Dependants of folks on employment visas are not longer given automagic permissions to work.

>> 2) Housing wise I am looking at service apartments as an option for a start. Will HKD 10K a month be sufficient for a 1 bedroom apartment in town and near MTR? If not what will be a reasonable housing allowance?

10K may be reasonable -- check the rates in our serviced apartment listings on
http://www.geoexpat.com/resources/Ho...ents/index.php

(Yeah, I'm sure the local trolls will recommend other sites for serviced apartments, we recommend a broker we know works well, because they give us commissions! )

A lot would depend on where your office is.

>> 3) Any recommendation on reliable relocation agencies that I can talk to for advise?

We've heard good things about AsianTigers ( http://www.asiantigers-hongkong.com/ ) and Santa Fe ( http://www.santaferelo.com/ecs/index.jsp ). Asian Tigers helped us with a complex office move and Santa Fe sponsors a lot of events at the American Women's Association where we're active.

The cost of living is surprising cheaper than Singapore if you consider the +++ taxes that get levied on everything. Housing is a bit more expensive so that is the major plus.

I've generally found Singapore a bit more expensive than HK.

>> HKD 850K annual package(includes any tax benefit + "CPF" similar contribution from employer) but excluding housing allowance reasonable?

Yes, it is reasonable in absolute terms. However, there are always other soft and emotional costs related to moves. At the end of the day, if you're happy with it ... thats what matters right?

Was thinking about BEA (built..) Systems. They're moving a fair few regional folks around from what I hear.

We are in the process of working with Santa Fe relo. They've done an excellent job and have made the move a lot easier.

Hi,

I am a newcomer in this forum, and was happy to see this very timely thread.

I will be moving to HK in a couple of months and currently negotiating the package. For those who relocated from the major US cities such as SF/Chicago/NY, wondering if you had to take a reduced salary in HK when you moved? If so how much less in percentage terms?

Our company localizes the compensation so I will most likely have to accept a lower base salary. However I would like to minimize the impact especially since I may repatriate with a different company and it may be hard to get the salary back up.

Really appreciate any advice!

>> reduced salary in HK when you moved?

You should not have to do this. The cost of living is higher than most US cities -- specially the rent.

>> localizes the compensation so I will most likely have to accept a lower base salary

That is complete bullshit (excuse my french!). You are being transferred because the company cannot find someone with your skillset locally. So why should you be on local terms? In some industries having an outsiders view point and experience is invaluable and simply cannot be paid for in local terms.
