We will be moving very soon and just want to get an idea of what items are good to buy in quantity from the US. I have a 3 yo boy and a baby on the way. Any ideas from expats would be greatly appreciated.

For grown ups ... most of the day to day stuff is available .... rest, you'll figure out it is easier to adapt.

You might get better tips on www.geobaby.com for the kids stuff.. things like strollers and other branded kids products are way overpriced in HK.

People in Hong Kong have a smaller size and most shops cater to that size.

If you have feet larger than size 10 (for men) or are taller than 6'3" or waist 40 then you better stock up. And don't forget to bring warm clothes. It can be cold in Winter and the houses are neither heated nor insulated.

If I were you I'd bring the franchise rights for every single eatery you have ever been to as all Armoricans on this site seem to crave all the food that is not available here.
Hopefully one of the Brits will bring Wimpy and Mr Whippy with them.

I'll second that. We spent a long time over at Ocean Terminal the other day and the prices on the baby stuff were too high, and the selection wasn"t that great.

I always bring Bras, Aunt Jamamia syrup and spray and wash stain stick.

I know this sounds crazy but I wish I had stocked up on Tide. You can get it here, just outrageously expensive. A good mattress is also very expensive. If you're not paying for shipping, I suggest getting a nice mattress from there. I'm very happy I did. Nice bed linens are also cheaper in the U.S. but that's assuming you are shipping your bed or know what size mattress you're going to get. Queen size here is different from the U.S. queen size. That's all I can think of now but I'm sure I'll come up with more later.

10lbs of Starbucks Coffee. It is EXPENSIVE here. If you are a coffee addict then bring a whole suitcase full and share with us.
Vitamins -- also expensive here.
Umbrella -- you will need it
Sunscreen -- you will need it
Go to COSTCO and load up on sundries IMO. Some things may be priced the same here but running around looking for it is a pain in the you know what.

Also office supples seem to be 3x the cost at Staples or OfficeMax. Paper is OK but the rest of the stuff is a joke for what they charge here.

Any toiletry that you have a special use for, be it toothpaste, shampoo, etc. You can find most of the stuff in HK that you have in the US, but the sizes are usually smaller and prices higher. Laundry soap (especially if you are partial to any brand) but that stuff is pretty expensive (and most people send their clothes out for washing).

Same with treats. You can find most US candy in HK but again, it's a bit hard.

I also brought my favorite BBQ sauce (from a local joint) as there was no way to find that in HK.

Basically, whatever you have a particular taste for. You can probably find it in HK but it is easier if you bring it with you (provided it is not too big).
