Don't forget Asian women seem to have a much smaller frame than the average non-Asian and seem to have a "slim gene", although its probably fair to see that they also don't eat as much. At home I am seen as slim (UK 8 / 10) but here that can in some stores translate to a LARGE .

Actually, it pays to be slim.

When it comes to saving fuel there is always the advice to dump any excess luggage from the trunk. You'd get the same result by dumping a few pounds off your waist.

I also eat my daily double cheeseburger. But without the bun.

It also helps to do it like the animals: drink before you start eating.

1-2 glasses of water right after you get up in the morning

1-2 glasses 1/2 hour before any meal

Water is also used for flushing the channel and make space for new deposits.

Tap water in HK is fine. You can boil it if you like and add some lemon or herbs and some salt (because you sweat a lot in HK). Carrying the bottles home on the other hand gives you some exercise.

Twelve ounce curls are another good form of exercise.

I advise against adding salt. There's plenty in pretty much everything you eat. Most people take in far too much sodium. If you do enough hard exercise, it's hard to get enough calories.

American consumerism. For most of the country, there's nothing to do but go shopping, watch tv and eat too much crappy food ...

Are you talking about salt or sodium?

Sodium is included in artificial sweeteners, MSG, and table salt.

It much depends on what you eat. There is not much salt in veggies, fruits and fresh fish. And raw meat also doesn't have much salt in it.

If you eat lots of processed food instead of cooking by yourself, then you are right. After all, the advise to reduce the salt intake was directed primarily at Americans.

Alternatively you could cut down on MSG and artificial sweeteners to cut down on sodium intake. The body needs the chloride in the salt to make stomach acid for digesting proteins. Amino acids made from protein are necessary to make up your immune system. And chlorides are used as first defence against bacteria, viruses and other invaders.

But in Hong Kong and China you can get anti-biotics for anything and everything. That's why it's a good breeding ground for all type of diseases like SARS or Bird Flu.

Considering how often Hong Kongers eat out, I would be willing to bet salt intake for the average person here is already over the recommended amount. Even with the restaurants that don't use MSG, most places here are very liberal with the seasonings.

I personally think that the brain and the stomach have different speed when it comes to feeling full.
If you eat the first Big Mac and still feel hungry, just wait 10 to 15 minutes and you'll find out you will not feel hungry anymore.

Expat: your typical HK diet is loaded w/ sodium. I don't use artificial sweeteners myself. Isomalt for one gives me incredible stomach cramps. I didn't know the Cl- ions in NaCl were used for HCl production. Interesting fact, thanks!
