How do headhunters/recruitment firms work here?

Hi All,

I've been looking for a new position here in HK or in Singapore, and many people have suggested speaking with recruiters or headhunting firms. That of course is good advice, but how does one go about doing that? I don't know any recruiters by name, so should I simply call the receptionist? Post my CV online at each of their websites (undoubtedly it would get lost in the masses, I'm afraid)? Any advice on how to get my name and abilities out there would be appreciated (by the way, I am a biz development professional worrking in the telecom sector).
Thanks!

You could peruse some of the job boards and look for positions that match your skillset and background. Contact the recruiter who posted the job since he or she may specialise in that area or could refer you to someone else who does.

Be wary of giving your CV to just any recruiter. The bad ones fax your resume all over town. Effectively the companies may not contact you even if you solicit on your own because the recruiter will demand a fee from them. Most of the low end recruiters dont add any value at all. Be wary of a recruiter who will not meet with you. Effectively you are picking an agent. Would you select an agent who will not meet with you one on one so you can screen them? Also ask them for references and who their clients are. Personally I think most of the low end ones are scum. Intellect is marginal and value added is questionable. Their are low barriers so entry and anyone can set up shop. Most of them are like used car salesman IMO. The retained search firms are the best. Determine the ones to contact for your industry.

goto boards

goto www.jobsdb.com and/or www.monster.com.hk.

from there you can cherry pick off the names of recruiting firms when you don't see company names.

they won't necessarily do much for you unless you've already got good pedigree, but it sure doesn't hurt to have some folks sourcing positions to you.
