using wlan phone / PDA at home

Hi there, I recently bought a Nokia N91 that has a built-in WLAN and noticed that at least with PCCW/Netvigator broadband there is no way that you can use the WLAN connection at home, as Netvigator requires you to use their own PC client and enter a password every time you start using the connection.

Does anyone have experience of having used such a phone (or PDA) at home, if so, which broadband provider did you use? Would really appreciate your response as it seems that the broadband companies are totally incapable of answering such a simple question.

Cheers,
Migao

It's totally possible. My Linksys router is configured to log me onto Netvigator Broadband over PPOE. I don't dial anything to get on. I just connect to my router wirelessly. Load up your router software and configure it to get you onto your Netvigator.

Why would PCCW want to tell you how to stop using their phone service?

But I'm curious why you want all this hassle - it is almost always possible to find a cheaper phone provider than, say, Skype Out, unless all you want to do is call LAN to LAN, but even then the quality is decreasing rapidly these days as ISPs linked to telcos make it harder and harder to use them for real-time communications (because it simply doesn't make business sense).

thanks!

thanks for the tips! I need to look into how to make my WLAN access point logging to Netvigator automatically, will keep you posted.

Why use WLAN at home with your phone?

1. To save time: I don't need to boot up my pc everytime I need to quickly check something from the internet, e.g my emails (corporate or private), weather (should I go running now or 1h later?), tv programs, etc. etc.

2. To save money: when doing above, not to pay a penny for variable data charges to the operator, I have already wireless data at my home and I'm paying for it, so I want to use it (and it is quite simple - normally...)

3. To use some unique applications that really take advantage of this, such as podcasting: you can download podcasts directly and automatically to your N91's 4GB HDD e.g. while you're sleeping... For podcasting on N91, check out www.nokia.com/podcasting

Cheers,
Migao

go for it!
I have used a HP with Windows CE about a year ago. It was slow but bearable. Some web pages may not look right.
Skype should work too!

Migao, after you have this set up and working manke sure you enable some of the security options if you intend leaving the wireless router on for long periods.
