Question Used to Live in HK - right of abode?

Hi all,

I used to live in Hong Kong during my childhood between 10 and 15 (circa 87-93ish). My mother still lives there and is a permanent ID card holder.

Can this help my case to go back and get right of abode and find work?

Last time I checked the ID website, it said that she or I needed to be ethnic-Chinese to claim right of abode, however neither of us are.

Anyone have any advice?

thanks

actually I've just realised I've resurrected an old thread from here with additional information on my situation:

Live in HK - can I get a permanent ID card?

Does anyone know what is the best way to contact the ID? Telephone (do they speak good English), email?

thanks

enquiry@immd.gov.hk is normally prompt and efficient (and English-speaking).

Have you thought about contacting an immigration agent? Of course there are rules but you can always make an appeal. Each case is treated on a case by case basis and exceptions are made.

I knew of someone in a similar situation a few years back. According to the published rules they had no chance of claiming their residency back. They applied, were turned down but were awarded residency on appeal.

Anyone know of a good reliable solicitor or such that might be able to advise on this issue?
