I heard the AKG 81djs are quite comparable to the new Senn HD25....but are much cheaper. Here's a link to a devoted thread on AKG 81djs on a different forum:

I've a pair of Shure E2. I only ever use them on public transport or planes which are far from ideal conditions. I find them adequate for this purpose (I've gotten over the urge to upgrade). Since getting a pair of DT880, I think I can stop thinking about buying headphones. Amplification is a different story though.

I can't think of one shop to go to for amps. Other than the places mentioned, there is;

Coem Audio
1401 Pakpolee Centre. 1A Sai Yeung Choi St. South.
旺角西洋菜南街1 A 百?利商業大廈1401 室
(He might have a few amps in stock - can order in anything from China)

and

http://www.avgala.com/contact/contact.htm

I've tried G&W T2.6 (It's a hybrid and the one I'll probably end up with)
Cayin HA 1A (all tube - I liked the sound, but slightly less than the G&W)
Opera Consonance Cyber20 (I didn't have my headphones when I tried this. I found that the music was very one dimensional. I need to try this one again)
Meixing ( Ming Da ) MC 66AE (I actually quite liked this one. It's all tube class A. Cheaper than the others at around $1400)

I still want to try the Dared MP5. It's an integrated amp with a dac (usb input). People say it has a good headphone output. It would be handy to be able to drive speakers too.

Neither3nor4:

Thanks for all the info. I just realised you had already recommended a few shops for amps in your first post. Much appreciated.

SO I take it you really enjoy your Dt880s. I'm currently in the market for some closed cans (mostly for indie rock/electronica), and I'm looking for lots of bass and soundstage.

So far people have recommended either the ATH A900 or the Dt770. Does Kingsound let you try out headphones? I would love to compare these.

p.s.

This hobby is a sickness.

Kingsound have some phones they will let you try out, but not all. You could call ahead and ask. Yes, I'm happy with the 880s. I haven't tried the 770s though.

thumbs up to this thread.

a question: moving to HK in a few weeks from Canada and I'm trying to decide what's cheaper to buy here and what's cheaper in HK. I've got the k81dj, senn hd215, senn cx300's, so i think i'm good for phones

but

looking for a good dac/amp setup for my laptop (but cheap). is zhaolu really the answer? what about an amp? i know this is very subjective so let's open it to some suggestions..

Hey! I just moved here from Canada too! If you're considering using your laptop as a source, I would suggest you buy an M-Audio Transit (which would provide an opitical out connection to your dac.

I'm in a similar situation..currently I have:

Laptop>m-audio transit>Pa2v2 amp>k81 djs

I'm looking into buying a dac, amp upgrade or a dac/amp combination as well as some new cans (either Beyer Dt770s or ATH 900s).

I might just buy the Zhalou 2.5 or the new Super DAC with an integrated headphone amp from http://www.diykits.com.hk/ here in Hong Kong.

Or, I may order an amp from the States with the dac. Or, I may pick up an amp from Kingsound (where I'll likely buy my headphones) here in Hong Kong: http://www.headphonehk.com/

Too many options and combinations if you ask me. If you haven't already visited this site: http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/index.php, check it out. Lots of information and experts to give you advice and suggestions.

Happy travels!
