Hi everyone,

Im actually getting ready to head to Central for the night yet I dont know anything about the bars/clubs scene in HK. Is there like an informal dress code?
Of course Im not trying to put on my blue collar safety clothes but are many places averse to casual stuff?

Assuming you are male...

No shorts, no sandals in many of the "clubs". Some will sniff at blue jeans (but black denim is always OK) and some at trainers that are too garish. Quite a few places will want guys to be in a shirt with a collar and at least an inch or two of sleeve.

Of course all the real pubs (Bulldog's, Whiskey Priest, HK Brew House, etc.) don't have any rules beyond the usual decency requirements.

If you're female then pretty much anything goes, but try to avoid looking like a cheap mainland hooker...

Indeed, Im a male, who just had a few drinks at the Cavern / HK Brew Bar and got in just fine with blue jeans and casual shoes... So I assume your advice holds! I'll follow it regardless of anonymous dissenters then !!
(btw there was a band @ the Cavern and its pretty damn loud.. Its like the whole neighborhood is living off the Caverns speakers!!)

just for your information, there are dress codes for ladies here. it's not just about you don't look like a mainland hooker. if you want to go to clubs, no scandal, no torn jeans, no sneakers for girls. but dress code thing change always change depending who you are going with. if you are going with some VIP or regulars of the clubs, you'll be fine.

well, i guess for girls, you don't want to look scruffy when you are out surrounded by gorgeous hotties. as long as you look good, the possibility of having a good night and more free drinks are higher. the sexier the better.

well, i can see why i don't get free drinks often. haha... but who cares, it's the good time i spent with my mates, the music, the drinks that counts. enjoy the night life in hk!

Dress codes also depend on who you know and how you carry yourself. I've never been turned away from a club here, even with a baseball cap and t-shirt on. Don't get me wrong, if I'm meeting someone special or the occasion calls for it, I'm all for collared dress shirts, slacks and loafers...I don't do that all that often though

So what is the "politically correct" way of getting the same point across (I don't think there's any doubting that it is basic rule for the bouncers... classier Filipinas or Thais don't seem to have much difficulty getting in to many of the places).

Interesting that your reference to "mainland" was actually to people from Thailand and the Philippines as opposed to people from China. I can't really comment on the "basic rule for bouncers" but if there is discrimination going on, it probably really isn't a dress code issue.
