Netvigator / NOW TV router setup

Just signed up with Now TV and Netvigator from PCCW.

I want to start using my own adsl wireless router (netgear dg834g) instead of the NEC box that PCCW provide because:

- one box instead of two (fewer wires / less power use)
- netgear router does the adsl login as opposed to logging in via windows broadband connection every time

I gave it a go the other day but had no success with either TV or broadband. Has anyone got any tips on configuring the router / adsl settings (e.g. PPoE or PPoA).

Also, willl the NOW TV work through the router? I know that the tv box has to be plugged into port 1 of the NEC router, is this the same for any router you would plug it into?

Cheers,
Harold

Er, no. You don't have this option. I believe you have to use the NEC ADSL router that PCCW provides. You can of course put another router behind it to run the PPPoE etc. (many here use the Linksys WRT54G series).

that's a shame....

so if I want to use the netgear (which is similar to the linksys model you mention) to provide the login credentials for adsl login and wireless networking, would the setup would look like:

Phone socket > NEC router > Netgear router

using a cat5 cable to link the two routers together.

I still need to set up the netgear router to provide the adsl logon credentials, but surely this would usually be provided to the adsl port on the router, not across the network ports?

For what I know the NEC box is just an ADSL modem with several Ethernet ports. It should'nt have any PPPoE or PPPoA capability. I'm not an expert, anyway.
You should setup your Netgear to logon using PPPoE mode with user name and password provided by PPCW and then connect your computers to the Netgear. In this way you are always on and don't need to connect via Windows on your computer.

No - the NEC is connecting the ADSL and providing ethernet (Layer 1/2); the router behind that simply sets up the Layer 3 (IP) on that ethernet. So unless your Netgear box has a "WAN" ethernet port it isn't going to work.

A previous arrivee with a Netgear DSL modem/router gave up and got a new wrieless route to sit behind the NEC box (cost ~HK$500 and quite compact if you just need wireless connectivity within one room).

yep, that's what I did before I got a VoIP telephone service - now that box does the PPoE. SO I now have 4 boxes!
phone socket>ADSL modem (PCCW/NEC) (port1)>NOW
phone socket>ADSL modem (port 2)>VoIP router>wifi router!!! all's seems to work

My router is an ADSL modem / wireless router - so it has four network ports and a phone line port for the adsl modem part. I'll try setting it up using PPPoE and will post back with results.

rolders,

The PPPoE setup should be straightforward.

On my ASUS WL-530g (Mars-bar sized 4-port 802.11g router - 350 HKD new or free with some PCCW deals) I just specify:

WAN connection type: PPPoE
Username: xxxxxxx@netvigator.com
Password: yyyyyyy

I tried like others to find a way to remove the NEC box from the equation but it doesn't seem possible - at least, not if you actually want to watch TV as well as use the BB.

Phil

rolders,
How're getting on?

Just to save you too must frustration if it doesn't work after you've given it a go.

I've got a feeling that PDLM may be right on that your device may not be the best for the setup (others can confirm) - you may not be able to get multiple PCs connected to the internet. unless you have a separate WAN connection

This is what I understand happens :

The ADSL part of a ADSL router would logon to netvigator and then passes across to wifi and ethernet.

A wifi (or broadband router) has a WAN port which picks up the signal from a broadband connection (cable or ADSL modem) and logons from there then routes across it's "firewall" to wifi and ethernet.

help with netgear router

I got netvigator about 7 days ago and managed to get my basic netgear router to login through the ZTE route supplied by pccw great joy until my 2 year old fixed the router. I have now purchased a brand new shiny WNR834b which does not seem to be abe to login through the zte router so no wireless. Lap tops detect and connect wireless and alos can connect via cabe to ZTE but not through Netgear. Netgear helpline suggested that zte needed switching to bridge mode but not absolutley since old router worked as is. Any bright tech sparks got any ideas
