Now some HK companies do not intend to give housing allowance because the Inland Revenue Department is now exercising a very tight control over the housing allowance.

In HK, the most expensive thing would go to housing. However, if you accept to live in a place not close to the downtown like Central, Wanchai & Causeway Bay, the rent will not be high. In fact, HK is very small so that it won't take you a lot of time on travelling.

Ignoring taxes, IMO would seem prudent to take the money. You are able to reduce your cost base as you see fit.

If you're looking for something like that in causeway bay and big enough to house a wife/husband and kid, then I think you just answered your own question about whether you'll be able to save much

If you want to live in a nice apartment with swimming pool or club house in Casueway Bay, it will significantly cost you. You may try Happy Valley or Tin Hau, Tai Hang. Or do you want to try Taikooshing in Hong Kong side. If you accept Kowloon side, try those properties in Olympics station.

I don't know much about the rental transactions in Happy Valley or Tin Hau. If for the apartment in Olympics Station, you have to prepare at least $15,000/month, which meet your requirments.

doesn't it mean that in a sector where remuneration is highly bonus driven that it would make sense to not ask for housing allowance and a higher base salary instead? Assuming that they are willing to structure it as such.
