Broadband accessibility Hi all, I'm moving to Shatin in November with my wife and currently have cable and broadband here in London. How easy is it to get broadband in the area and who would be the best company to sign up with i.e. equivalent to Telewest or NTL. P.S. We would also love to meet up with people for social expeditions and the like when we get to Hong Kong. Thanks Paul

Broadband in HK is alot cheaper than in the UK for what you can get - and it is widely available. I doubt you will have any problems at all in Sha Tin. We signed up with PCCW hen we first arrived 4 months ago and so far had an excellent service. We pay around 210 dollars per month for a package of unlimited broadband plus the broadband TV deal which includes 2 free subscription channels and a bunch of not so great free ones. The guy comes around and sets it all up, plus if you move you get one free re-installation. Someone is always doing some sort of deal so just shop around for what you want. I should note that the deal we signed is for a minimum of 18 months, no get-out clause. If you don't want it after a while you will still pay for it until the contract is up. Just walk into any PCCW shop (there are tons) and ask about what is on offer. p.s. welcome to HK Last edited by Pekkerhead; 22-08-2006 at 09:03 PM.

Broadband is available all over Sha Tin including the villages. Depends what building you are in to what is available to you. PCCW are pretty much everywhere and HGC, HKBN and iCable are available in most areas. All a damn site cheaper than the UK. A 10mb VDSL from HGC is now about $138, 8Mb adsl from PCCW with a few free channels of TV hovers around the $200 mark depending what deal you can get. iCable shows the English Premier League, but all I've heard about iCable is complaints!

but keep in mind PCCW's broadband speeds are only within HK: most of their pipewidth is local, so essentially many times you're stuck with dial-up to the outside world. don't know about other providers. but yes, service is pretty much available everywhere.

Actually I haven't heard of anybody in HK who still uses dial-up.

PDLM, the most i've ever had to the US thru the Speakeasy test was 3000, and the last few days it's been more like 300-500.
