Moving to Hong Kong in July

I live in Miami, Florida and will be moving to Hong Kong in July to get my MBA at CUHK. I am trying to figure out where I should live since the school is in the New Territories. I'm not sure what the distance is between HK Island or Kowloon to the school. How long would the commute be? Any information on any apartments for rent nearby? Thanks in advance!

Hiya,

I believe CUHK is close to a KCR train station, so commuting shouldn't be very difficult. However, the closer you get to the city the higher the rents will be. So assuming you're on a student budget it might be best to stay in the NT where rents are reasonable and come down to town on the weekends. The train ride to TST will be around 40mins.

Have a look at www.gohome.com.hk to get an idea of apts in the area.

Try living on campus .. that would be most convenient.

Anywhere along the KCR route (http://www.kcrc.com/eng/services/routemap/index.asp) between Tai Wo - Shatin or Ma On Shan will take ~ 20 mins.
Kowloon (TST) to CUHK - 30+ mins by MTR & KCR
HK island - 40-45 mins
Anywhere else - Gold Coast, Tuen Mun, Laguna, etc - 1 hr++

Above times are for public transport. Add another 10+ mins to travel within campus .. depending on where your school is located.

You can also find chartered buses from few areas over HK .. coming to school at 8:30 and leaving at 5/5:30 or so.. but that may be too restrictive.

if you do not find it salubrious to live on campus, your base of choice would have to be Hong Lok Yuen, which is north of Taipo

I think living on campus is the best option if available.

re: Hon Lok Yuen, it is really really expensive so don't even think about it.

You can get a 500 sq ft flat in an estate or village house in Tai Po or Fo Tan for around HK$4,000 per month which are both very close to campus. Check out GoHome’s site as recommended by Rani, also the uni should be able to help you with finding accommodation.

Hong Kong is a very small place and travelling times are very short no matter were you live. I currently live in Fo Tan in the New Territories and travel to Central by KCR/MTR or bus and it only takes around 45 mins each way.
