Question mobile hard disk checkup @ airport

Hi, I would be flying again to HK next week. I'm just wondering if airport security would be checking up contents of portable hard disk drives that arriving passengers bring along. This is in lieu of the prevailing anti- music & video pricacy guidlines. Inputs would highly be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

I've brought an external 250gb HDD from germany in June, and 2 more internal drives, 300gb and 320gb in July in my hand luggage.

No problems so far. Just my experience..

No, I had a 250GB HDD with me in my notebook bag. I think they asked me to remove it and scan it seperately in the US but that was it. Nothing on the HK side. Nothing in Tokyo and nothing in Seoul.

You seem suspicious.

Same here. I had 2 300GB external HDD's in my hand lugguage flying to Sydney return at the end July. No checks when leaving HK and arriving in Sydney. Leaving Sydney they wanted to scan the HDDs seperately but again no checks when I arrived back in HK.

They don't check. If you are paranoid, just use Truecrypt.

Talking

I would rather call my mood cautious. This is because I am planning to copy on disk some DVD concerts of my favorite bands.

One more 'suspicious' question; if you will: would airport securities hang me if i bring in paper covers (just paper covers) of bootleg DVDs?

I wouldn't risk it. That would be a dead giveaway wouldn't it?

If you're copying the DVDs in your hard disk already, what's the point of bringing the labels with you?

All these questions are making you a very suspicious character indeed. You also asked about the limits on cigarette and liquor that tourists can bring into HK, in another message thread! You're asking all these questions seemingly thinking that people here can't put two and two together...
