Hong Kong and IC Design Talent

I'm an expat electronics engineer considering getting a startup going in HK. The company would be a fabless mixed-signal integrated circuit design house. Can anyone comment on the quality and availibility of local engineering talent in HK, and also suggest good places to look for employees?

I'll be doing the typical postings on monster and jobsdb, but I am hoping for some pointers to help me track down a more targeted employee skill set specific to the field of hardware and/or software engineering.

If I can find some good talent it would seem HK is not a bad spot - access to on-demand EDA tools through the Science Park, reduced salaries from North America to keep costs low, etc...

Any other general pointers appreciated.

are you looking for very experienced engineers? there really aren't many ic design engineers. in fact, there are only a few local companies who are in the industry. there's also only one school (UST) that offers a master degree in ic design engineering.

so if you're going to find talents, i suggest you try recruiting from UST, the university of science and technology.

Hi greenietea,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I would definitely prefer a decent level of experience (maybe hire 1 designer with 4-6 years exp, and another with 0-2 for layout). Is it very competitive to find that kind of thing? I'm hoping the engineer with 4-6 years of exp can design basic blocks such as amplifiers, A/D, and perhaps a simple LDO.

In fact I'm quite familiar with the IC masters program at HKUST, since I'm in fact a graduate myself when the program was first offered 3 years ago It's a good suggestion to contact them, I will definitely do so.

I noticed you said you worked at the Science Park in another post - are there job boards / websites for the Science Park that let people post job opportunities?

science park does have a site that displays job opportunities, but i didn't know about this until just now: http://www.hkstp.org/english/job/job.html

you'd definitelly have better luck at posting on jobsdb.com or classifiedpost.com though. and perhaps you should also try the agencies. from what i see, many experienced and talented engineers find their jobs through word of mouth or are called by the agencies.

I did a search through the forums for the names of some hi-tech recruitment agencies, but didn't come up with much. Can anyone recommend a few good ones?
