Unhappy is food the first thing that is missed?

i never thought i'd say this given the number of times i've grumbled about them, but i'm actually missing tesco...oh and sainsburys of course, the best uk supermarket.

anyone else feeling this way..?

how did waitrose monopolise the hk supermarket scene?

what's this about an all you can eat breakfast place...

i definitely live to eat!

Taste is a glorified Park N Shop, but they do have some extra things you can't find in a normal Park N Shop

I checked out a grocery store called "CitySuper" a couple weeks ago and they have more western stuff, but the prices are stupid expensive. Not worth the effort, IMO. Adjust your diet.. you might live longer

City Super has imported foodstuff from around the world - no wonder things are pricey-er (sp?) there...

There are a couple of ParknShop Superstore too. Although not any close to the scale superstores can be in the UK or N America, they still have cooked food stalls, meat, frozen food, proper groceries, etc. For location, try http://www1.parknshop.com/WebShop/help1.jsp

Other than that, you've supermarkets in Japanese department store such as Sogo, Jusco, Uni in Taikoo, Seiyu in Shatin in a similar style.

I'll say that this is because everyone lives in the city area, places are so accessible that no one really needs to drive to get groceries every week...!

That and because land is expensive in HK...

If you're looking for western stuff which you can't find in Parkn'Shop or Wellcome try Olivers in Prince's Building, Central. A little pricey, but selection is good. Also, for an extensive selection of grains & flour you can try Great in Pacific Place (Admiralty MTR).

The problem with buyng local/Chinese vegetables is that they are absoloutely laden with pesticides and herbicides. It is in the papers weekly. If you have the where with all to do some tests on your purchases you would be shocked.

City's Super, Oliver's, Great Food Hall have a decent range of imported foods but it will never match European or N American shopping.

The few wholesalers who sell direct are often not much cheaper than buying from the shops so that option is not so good either.

Missing something from home is a normal thing.

From my experience, I have been able to get (almost) all the groceries I desired in HK; however, some could only be found at Oliver's, City Super or Sogo's food section and thus, came at a steep price. This, however, is expected of imported foods of limited interest to the general population. My biggest challenge has been to find sufficiently 'hard' bread, which is a common problem for Germans abroad and thus, I never expected to find such bread in HK anyway.

Texasaxel - If you're looking for dense Rye or Pumpernickel sliced bread (the kind we Danes eat for lunch), then Great has the best selection in my opinion. They have different types including sunflower, mueslii and flax-seed, and they sell cheaper than Olivers. For "morning bread" it's very hard to find a sufficiently dense bread for my taste, so I'm with you there on that problem.

Bread is definately an issue for lots of us. I miss the wonderful brown crusted breads from Italy. Never once have had a good Italian bread here. Panini is fine but not what I want.
