Cashing AMEX USD Travellers Checks in Hong Kong

Hey guys I could really use your help.

I need to transfer $16,000 USD in Travellers Checks to HKD by Aug 8th.
I have to pay a supplier in Shenzhen and they have a limit of $500 exchange per day.

Does anyone know if the banks in Hong Kong have the same kind of Bullshit limits.

And which banks have the best rates and the lowest commisions.

Thanks Guys

I'm curious. Why do you pay a supplier with Travellers Cheques? Never heard before.
What about a T/T?

Travellers Checks

I came into Hong Kong for meetings with Mobile phones suppliers in Shenzhen. I had never met any of them before so after around 40 meetings with different companies I made my choice.

I had placed an order with them and instead of shipping the goods home to Vancouver, I will be taking them with me, so it will be a cash and carry deal with the supplier.

For future orders I will simply use TT, but I have been ripped off in the past and want to meet everyone I deal with face to face, even when that means travelling half way around the globe.

I have run into alot of the same banking headaches in Hong Kong, the max I could exchange today was $500 USD in Travellers Checks at BEA.

and then of course everything closes at 1pm.

The banks suggested I use a currency exchange here in Hong Kong, I dont really feel like getting my pants pulled down over the deal.

I would be greatful for any input.

Regards

No fees, No Limits, Better Rates.

Patels is a good choice. Forget the banks as they have fees and so does Amex offices.

Good Luck

Go to Citibank.
They should be able to do it.

I changed Traveller's Checks there.
$10,000 USD.

If you need to change more than $10,000 at one time you need to bring the receipts.

I heard there is an American Express somewhere in Central?

Just a thought..Can't you just sign over the checks to the person you are paying?? If he runs a biz he can have it cashed. I have done this with some factories in Guandong area with no problems.

Thanks for all of your input

I will try Citibank and The Mansion Place in TST.

And I went to the Bank of China with the company in Shenzhen to see if I could simply sign over the checks to the company, it can be done but the bank of China will hold the funds for 30 business days because I am not a Resident of HK and do not have and ID Card.

Any other options would truely be appreciated.

thanks

Amex themselves on Queen's Rd Central. Take proof of purchase and a few pieces of identification along. Talk to their manager for advice.
