Why are we self-segregating by age?

Browsing through the Geoexpat "meet & greet" section, I encountered more "age groups" than in a typical athletic (running, biking, triathlons etc) competition. Early 20s, mid-20s, late 20s, early 30s.... the list goes on. Do we really need to socially segregate according to these narrowly defined age groups? I personally get along with people whose age ranges from early 20s to 40s. Plus it is not that we have a hugh geoexpat social circle anyway. The events I have been to tend to have less than 20 participants, and maybe 1 or 2 in my "age group".

Although some of these age group gatherings do claim to "welcome everyone", I am a bit uncomfortable participating in "other age groups". So tell me, people in Groexpat: Do you really feel more comfortable hanging out in specific "age group" events? Or are you like me, find this idea a bit exclusive?

Some do, some don't. I don't have any particular preferences.

The key is to find and hang out with a group you're comfortable associating yourself with.

I know what you mean, but I don't think it's as serious as it looks. You should come along to one of the bigger or less focussed gatherings - I think the last biggie hit 200 people (due for another one soon? ). Huge mix of people there, no-one cares about age, occupation or anything else. The techies got together last night, and no ageism involved there either.

I don't think any of the groups are particularly trying to exclude other age groups, it's just people of a similar mind getting together. Let's face it, your interests do change between age 20 and 35. Some of them anyway!

Anyway, the early 20s started it. If they get too exclusive we'll just have to launch a raid on one of their nights out!

Well, there's the reality that when a 30-something finds himself in a crowd which happens to consist of people in their early 20's, the lack of a common topic for discussion becomes apparent. There's only so much that you can fake to be interested in (now don't nail me to the wall with that <-- word), and I'm betting that the other person is also finding it hard to try asking the "right" questions (or saying the "right" things) to keep a discussion going. I think classifying by age provides a broad spectrum of commonalities about which everyone knows a fair amount of information.

Hell, I'm waiting for the late 60-somethings to start their group.

Either that or the 24 and 11 months to 25 and 1 month-something get togethers.

But we were merely responding to earlier threads - we're acting completely in self defence (if that line works for world leaders, it'll do for me ).

Personally my mental age varies from 70 down to about 24 depending on company, life in general and the time of night.
