Question about Netvigator and IP address

My mom signed up for Netvigator with high speed internet access bundled with NOW TV for a low price. When I was in HK I notice I had to login to the service through PPPOE. What I cannot remember and wants to know is did she get a publc addressable IP? Which port does Netvigator/PCCW block? Can she put up a web server or ftp server and will I be able to access it from the states ? Any information and help will be appreciated. thanks.

She is having public IP address which itself is a dynamic IP address.I have the same connection (broadband and NOW TV) and through my modem which has 4 ports as well, only 2 of them working though ( I still not sure if I should call it a modem or router). All the ports are blocked on it except port 22 whihc is used for SSH. I can successfully do the VNC thing and other port 22 stuff but since all other ports are blocked there is no way to set up a web server or ftp server or anything like that.

It sucks really. Were it not for Star Plus channel on NOW TV I would have preferred HGC broadband. To my knowledge they do not block the ports.

thanks atique and I am a newbie so excuse my cross posting.

I have a follow up question to ensure I understood your respond. So the modem does not have ssh running or listening on port 22 which allow us to put a VNC server (your example) or other type of listener as long as I can tell it to listen on port 22?

So it should be possible to tell a web server to listen on port 22 instead of default port 80. I can access it via http://mom'sdynamicaddress:22/

Am I on the right track?

Well, I do not want to write anything that I myself don't know.I am not sure what it means in networking if this particulat modem/router have ssh running or listening on port 22 but what I can assure is that it does allow traffic for port 22. As I said earlier that I am using OSXVnc running on my PowerBook.

Yes, as far as I know you can change the web server to listen on a different port. I have not tried it because running VNC is more important for me here than running the server. You can try to change the web server port to listen on port 22.

You can check which ports are open by going here.

Once this website did show one more port opne on this PCCW modem/router. It was something in 500 range. I do not know for whta purpose that port is but searching internet I found it is for commerce use or something like that.

I just rescanned my ports and this site does not even show port 22 open, strange

Best of luck. Sorry if I am little confusing, English is not my first language.

I am not using the wirless setup but it should be pretty simple I guess. Just unplug the modem end network cable of the computer. Then plug the WAN port into it where you have unplugged the cable in the first step. Input the user name and passowrd in wireless router, different routers have different steps. And you are done.
