Moving To Shanghai with a pet? Please advise...

Hi all,

My friend will be arriving to Shanghai on Aug 21st, he currently lives in NYC and have a 2 years old Yoki which will be moving with him. I would appreciate if someone could advise on what’s the procedure, Before/Post move of things he needs to do/Prepare for the Dog?
i.e… Paper Work (Chinese, home country??), Any restrictions on the Chinese …
Since the dog is really small, the dog will be flying in the cabin..

Since Feb. 2006 all incoming pet are subject to a mandatory 7 day quarantine by Chinese officials. During this time you may not visit them. (That alone would make me not bring my pet, if we/he had to go through that). After that, your pet (a Yorkie, is that right?) would officially still be under a quarantine, but at your home and officials would reserve the right to come and pop over for checks anytime.

I just read some of that in the June issue of the Courier, a monthly publication of the Shanghai Expatriate Association. It was written by a local vet here and I found it very helpful information. You might try googling the Shanghai Expat Assoc. or better yet, try to contact the PAWS veterinarian office here (sorry I don't have any of their info on hand) and see if they could forward you that article or just ask them some direct questions.

As far as airlines... we took United because our cat was allowed to be in the cabin with us.

Best of luck, but if we had to do it over with these new regs, I'd make sure that our pet was left in the US with a caring friend or family member.

PAW Shanghai is located by the Yan'an Xi Lu metro stop (lines 3 and 4) at the corner of Kaixuan Lu and Xinhua Lu. They are open seven days a week and can be contacted at (86-21) 5254-0611; if it's an emergency after they've closed, they can be reached at 13816685486. When it's working, their website is http://www.paw-vet.com, but for now, you can find some information on them atthis vet information page.

Shanghai's SCAA (Second Chance Animal Aid) has an article from Dr James Holder, one of the vets at PAW, on the new quarrantine process. James is great -- knowledgeable, kind, and patient -- and he has the magic touch with difficult pets. I'm going to miss him and PAW both when I move to Hong Kong.
