Visa & perm Id questions (not the usual ones)

Hi
I wonder if anyone can clarify a couple of things for me
I have a friend who has been working on a two year contract which has been several times. There work Visa is valid until 2008 but their present company has decided not to renew their contract so they will be unemployed as of September.

My questions are

Are we right in assuming the work visa is only valid with their current job and will they need to go through the work visa situation again if they wanted to take a different job with a different company?
Will there current company notify Immigration that they no longer work for them once there contract is over?

The person has been here for around 10 years and has a property can they gain a permanent HK ID if they are not working or is the application to be backed up by current employer etc

Thank you everyone

Yes.
Yes.
Not sure - but since they have been here 10 years and they are still employed now why don't they make an application for Permanent Residence immediately?

The forms and notes are here: http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/right_1.htm

Thanks PDLM

Do you know if his current employer has an obligation to inform Immagration that he no longer works for them?

Also anyone know the answer to the second part of the question concerning the HK Id ?

Exactly! Get your friend to apply for PR ID right now - in July itself without vacillating or procrastinating!! With PR the ability to stay in HK won't depend on a specific employer and make finding a new employer that much easier. The property can be mentioned in the application in support of what one's done to make HK one's permanent place of residence (though HK Immigration don't seem to care too much about this section now). Copies of past income tax assessments (supportings for the application to show one's been living and working in HK) can be obtained easily from the income tax office in Revenue Tower free of charge.

Sorry - that's what my answers meant last time:

Yes to visas being linked to a specific employer.
Yes to the employer having an obligation to inform ImmD (and IRD) when you leave their employ.
Not sure about applying for PR if you are unemployed and looking for work whilst within the "grace period" of an existing Employment Visa.

But get an application in now and PR might be granted before the end of September anyway.

And incase they dont grant PR by september, U can still stay in HK if the application is being processed.
