My boyfriend has been here 7 yrs and has just got his residency, we are planning on getting married within the next year. I have been working here for the last three and a half years as an English language teacher. My question is when we get married is there any chance I would be granted a dependent visa which would allow me to work part time?

Technically speaking, yes, you'll be a dependant of a permanent resident so it allow you to work. However, do keep in mind that you're dealing with a govt department that is inconsistent at times (usually not the case).

Also, you probably have a visa at the moment.... why bother changing to a dependant visa?

personally, I would recommend that you continue working until you independantly achieve PR rights - therefore you will maintain your independance.

I have heard that dependants who arrived in HK after a certain date (last July 1st?) no longer enjoy the right to be employed here.

The SAR government did rewrite the immigration law this last summer. To paraphrase the officials, persons on dependent's visas no longer have more rights that the sponsor. So if the sponsor can work without a work visa (e.g. a permanent resident) then the dependent can as well. If the sponsor requires a work visa, then the dependent will need a work visa from an employer as well.

Not sure about a situation with investment scheme visa holders, but if you've got that much money to drop in to long-term illiquidity, then you can afford to consult an immigration lawyer as well.

Correct, new dependant visa holders can't legally work.

Is someone is on a investment visa, their dependant, if they have one, also cannot work in Hong Kong.

I'm confused... two persons said the complete oposite thing...
So Now, I really wish to know exactly what is the situation about working right for dependant visa holders Because it very important for me!

I'm getting married in 2 week with my wife-to-be ^^ and she is a HK resident and of course can work and all without visas (she was born here and she's chinese) And we will ask for a Dependant visa for me since i'm visitor right now.

Then, Since the change made by the immigration dept. this summer; can I legally work when I get my dependant visa?

You can work if you're a dependant of a permanent resident.

You cannot work if you're a dependant of someone who is here on a conditional residency visa (work, student etc).

maybe my question is off this thread but, if a person is on condition work visa, how does he or she renew it ?
