indie film, please.

Hi all,

I'm a new arrival here in HK, from Canada originally, but most recently from Japan. There was a real dearth of English-friendly independent film in Nagoya, and I was hoping that here in HK there might be some tiny art house cinema that would show stuff in the vein of Wes Anderson, Michel Gondry, PT Anderson, Minoru Kawasaki ... all sorts of absurdist and/or disassociated artsy crap that I like. I'd even stomach David Lynch or Lars von Trier. Do you have any suggestions? I'd appreciate any guidance on where I can watch new independent movies or even re-runs of stuff made by classic directors.

-j.

For rerun classics, Broadway Cinematheque http://www2.cinema.com.hk/revamp/htm...e&cinema_id=10
The Cine-Art House also has some arty stuff from time to time... http://www.cityline.com.hk/eng/movie...jsp?venueKey=8

Broadway Cinamatheque has the closest I've found to an arty cafe too. It's pleasant with good cheap food and a cache of dvds for rental for members...

Thanks

Thanks for your input

I'll be checking out Cine-Art shortly to watch Hidden.

A coworker also passed me this link for anyone else who might be interested: Ying E Chi - http://www.yec.com/ - which seems to be an indie film non-profit.

Just want to clarify that Broadway Cinema doesn't just show classics. The theater in Kowloon and IFC in central are linked and show a lot of the new recent foreign and indie films.

Tho if you want to talk about really indie North American films... it might be hard to find them in theater in HK. I'm afraid your options are limited to DVDs at Broadway shop or online importing.

EDIT: If you are a film-afficionados, you MUST join the Broadway club. Annual fee is 100 I believe and it entitles you to 85% off all tickets (dont' know about tuesday, tho) at IFC and Broadway Cinemas. Not to mention discounts off all vcd/dvds purchase at their shops. Sometimes you even get to attend premieres, Q&As, seminars, and other special events like that.

And I don't work for them. I just appreciate and enjoy what they do.

You mean 15% off don't you? I.e. a $70 ticket costs $59.5 (not $10.5).

Great, thanks for the tips, all.

I checked out the Hong Kong Arts Centre Agnes B Cinema this weekend, and that was alright too. It seems to show a few of the more experimental films.
