I have been lurking in these forums for a while and it's been an amazing source of information, so firstly i'd like to thank everyone before launching into this question.

I am an Aussie in my 20s living in Guangzhou but I recently got a job + visa in HK and will be moving there and I am just looking at tenting a flat or a room. the nature of my job is that I will be travelling 95% of the time and hoping to save money. I figure I might has well live in a box for 4 days a month and save money. My Mandarin is ok and I have recently started on cantonese.

My question is: Are there ANY cheap local sharehouse situations with locals HK? I am keen to rent something cheap and culturally immersive for at least those days that I am home. but it seem that everyone lives at home until marriage and with the prices I have seen, who can blame them. Are there any students from Taiwan, or the mainland that rent here?
Has anyone done, or heard of anyone doing long term homestay here?

I would happily rent a shoebox inside a normal cantonese home.
