Hello! We are a young couple (22) moving to Hong Kong (from UK) to teach English in primary schools. We have job contracts in place (with Chatteris Educational Foundation) and have to let them know in the next couple of weeks if we have any preference as to location, ie Central, Kowloon etc...so they can place us in schools....

There is only so much i can gaige from reading books, looking online etc so if anybody can help would be much appreciated!

We will be on pretty modest budget and will be hoping to rent a place for <HK$8000 if at all possible ( somewhere that isnt a one room studio). We are not particulary fussed about being in main residential areas such as central (which is probably good considering our budget!) and are quite keen on the idea of being somewhere fairly rural but with easy access to central etc..

where are we likely to get the most for our budget without being somewhere too dreadful ????

oh and one more thing...we are soooo excited about moving to HK..we're not going to be disapointed are we?!

What is the location of your school?

Central is not rural in any way but even if you chose to live in Discovery Bay or the Gold Coast for more value for money and space then you are only about 40 minutes away by ferry/bus.

if you are on a budget, i wouldn't recommend Discovery Bay, especially for a couple of 22 year olds... you'd need to add a minimum of $2500 per month onto transportation costs... not to mention that Db is mostly made up of 30 somethings with families...

you may want to try lamma island or cheung chau....you could get a nice flat in a village house, there are many young people, the transportation costs are lower...but your travelling time goes up dramatically...

We don't know the location of our school as of yet, we will assigned a school when we arrive on the 14th August - but we can state preferences as to area...which is our dillema!

I have looked at Lamma island and really like the idea of it - is it easy to find a flat there? When looking at property sites on the net it seems to be pretty limited.

another question if i may...are there any/many expat football (not american football) teams in HK??...would love to play!!

if you are interested in lamma... when you get to hk, head over there and walk into a real estate agents and tell them your requirements...
they' be able to show you a few places on the spot

Mui Wo (in the bay next to Discovery Bay) is another buget option. There are two property agents who specialize in South Lantau property:

Don't know about Lamma property agents tough.
