Just say "yau lok ah, m goi" with a volume that everyone can hear, so even if the driver doesn't hear you there's still a chance that other passengers will help you stop the car

That bothers me too. The main bus companies have bells installed but the light buses can't be bothered. Is it a cost issue? Perhaps if they had not spent so much on the "bells and whistles" of LED speedometers and LCD video screens we could have bells instead of having to whistle (to stop)!

Some of them do have bells - but people still shout, so you feel like a real lame foreigner using it!

it might be partly that many of the minibuses don't always have established bus stops, they will stop pretty much anywhere you ask them(unless there's a double yellow line)...

many locals will not just say "stop", they'll say.... "stop outside the bank" or "stop at #..." "stop under the foot bridge" type of thing

the big buses have well established stops, so bells would work better...

Yes cara, but that doesn't explain why the regulated mini-/public light buses don't have bells. The regulated buses have fixed stops and fixed routes. Now they just have to fix the speed limits too ...

But you can also ask regulated minibuses to stop almost anywhere you want. Ringing the bell does not tell a minibus driver exactly where you want to get off.

But I must admit. Those beeping speedometers are really annoying. It does not keep the minibus driver from speeding. They make the drive irritating.

Whats more irritating is those that let there mobile ring and look at the screen whilst its still ringing and decide to answer it 10 seconds later.

And also those that don't know how to speak quietly on the phone!

Oh that is SO annoying especially when the ringtone is some clip from a Canto pop song - that reminds me I must sample Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Hong Kong Garden" for my mobile :-)
