One never plans to run up debt...these things happen....its always good to know that if needs be I have some sort of buffer....

When I tried to open an account at HSBC without a HKID, they said I needed a sponsor... i.e. someone with a HKID and a current HSBC account (that and HK$3000 minimum deposit).

Don't get me started about the world's local bank. Please don't ....
Most of the second tier banks will allow you to open an account.
If you have an Amex or Citibank credit card (these are the really global banks which don't pretend to be local) they will be more than happy to accomodate you. My first card from about 11 years ago was a Citibank which I still have.
