What airlines? Many of the airlines have some sort of power available in Business / Premium Economy.

One thing, if you're above 5'5 and travelling on CX, you're seriously not going to have much room to open your laptop in Cathay Economy.

CX does have a number of kits available, should you need them. I think Targus has something which works on the airline power adapters.

CX is the best bet - they are the only ones AFAIK that have some power plugs in economy. I had no problem regarding room with my 17" laptop, but I did have one problem - not enough juice! I couldn't power my laptop with it

Anyway, not ALL seats have plugs in economy, and you will need an adapter. They won't loan one to you if you're in economy either; I had to buy mine. Too bad it didn't work

Oh well my new laptop shouldn't be a problem next time

Hopefully they'll rethink this. I'd think a laptop is the main thing people would like to use in flight.

It's not their fault, my laptop isn't really meant to be used like that. It was more of a 'desktop replacement' as opposed to something you'd actually use while on the road.

They have detailed seat maps including the location of power plugs on most major airlines.

Unfortunately they aren't always correct, and when I did email them to send corrections, they ignored it

Good site to go by overall though.

Your best bet is to check with the airlines you're flying with. The websites for the majors have seat plans but even then it's best to call them direct. The problem is knowing the type of plane for your route isn't enough due to the large amounts of refurbishments going on over the last few years. Each round of refurbishment results in an internal code so for example CX may have a fleet of Airbus A330-300's within in which their may be code 3334,3335, 3336 and so on. Each code having slightly different configurations and ammenities. What you need to find out is the plane's code and from there work out which seats have the power sockets.

Also if you are a fat person with difficulty squeezing into the seat forget using a laptop. Recently on a flight to Mumbai I had the short fat Indian dude who had trouble fitting in the seat...but then he got his laptop out and started to spread his crap all over the place until I ..... nevermind
