Not really no, It means I failed here in HK and I did not expect to be back in U.K so soon. Will be going back to lick my wounds, review my strategy and work out where it went wrong and in the meantime do some contracting to replenish my bank account which is non existant. |

Jimbo, I really do think it is best for you to work on getting that degree sorted out. Without a degree, you'll find it difficult to work overseas (outside the UK) as a it tends to be the lowest level of qualification for most immigration departments. Other than that .. tie the knot. Best wishes!

Thanks KIA but its the vicious cycle of needing to get a job to fund the degree in the first place. The marriage route is not presently an option as it should be for the right reasons and not just for me to stay here indefinately. I'll see what my immigration lawyer says and take it from there.

How right does the reason have to be? Isnt staying in Hong Kong with someone you want to get married to a good enough reason? You're a practical guy and as long as you're being fair in the "until death do us apart" part of the vow... Seriously, I think you're wasting time with the immigration lawyer, unless they're exceedingly crafty.

He's working for me for free at the moment anyway so its not a problem. I just want some clarification as immigration keeps on changing the rules as to whether I can stay or not. Hence the need for the lawyer.

Jimbo, I'm also a BBC and came to HK pre '97. Even back then I had to show copies of my parents HKID cards with PR status, their marriage certificate, my birth certificate, etc. April 2006, my sister-in-law applied for HKID for my 12 yo nephew, also a BBC. SiL has HKID card, but my brother does not. Five weeks later, Immigration issued a letter requesting the presentation of the following documents (in original) for further processing: - Applicant's travel doc. showing current condition of stay in HK - Applicant's birth certificate - Mother's HKID card - Mother's travel doc and her immigration status/condition of stay in the UK at the time of applicant's birth - parents' marriage certificate (Though my SiL can provide all of the above docs, there's a chance that my nephew still can't get HKID as the docs need to be presented within a specified time. Though my brother has asked for an extension, the extended period still does not tie in with their planned visit to HK next summer. Anyhow, for you I think the most tricky will be the expired passports of parents, I hope you mother still kept hold of them.... Good Luck!

Sorry to hear about that... some things sometimes happen for a reason, and who knows, you might find a better opportunity in the UK!
