| | | Jimbo,
You poor thing, I really feel sorry for you...Well, maybe the trip back to London might come useful now...Pick up that birth certificate and and go back to immigration...And stuff it in their face and get your residency. Actually, have to agree with you on the competency of immigration department. They took like 8 weeks to issue me my visa. Got a little frustrated with them!

| | | Well on the positive side you 've got a potential HKID option with your birth certificate and your parents' details.
I hate to play devil's advocate here but you should also suspect the reason why all of a sudden today these guys gave you a ray of hope that previously wasn't there. You've been sparring with them all afternoon regarding your tourist visa, specifics may potentially have been vague, they clearly are displaying a lack of understanding of the law (the legality of looking for work??) and nothing they say is likely to have been recorded with regard to your HKID option. The guys you spoke to at immigration may very well have said you have a HKID option that doesn't really exist either to get you off their back or due to sheer incompetence. I really hope I'm wrong on this though for your sake.
Best to spend the next week having a look at it in greater detail. Get explicit on the specifics of your circumstances and the documents you can provide. Have another chat with immigration. It'd be even better if you could speak to an immigration lawyer to get professional and considered advice. You should also be able to find the legislation for a dependant's right to a HKID and go through that.

Well I've spoken to an Immigration specialist and have given him all the details and he's getting back to me.
I had my mother in tow and they had a chat in Cantonese so they discussed it with her as opposed to myself direct.

| | | There's a good chance you're eligible for a HK ID card, but you might not get the right of abode being that you're a citizen of the UK. Happened to an ABC friend of mine recently...it's still good enough to work on, but you CAN be deported if need be. | |
