NET Scheme Questions

I have an interview for a NET Scheme position in a couple of weeks and I have a few questions for anyone out there who's working for the bureau already.

1.) Certificate of Service. I don't have one. My last (and only) teaching job screwed me over and I left. Don't think the director thinks he owes me any favors. I've heard the CS is mainly for calculating your pay, is that true?

2.) What would be the salary cap (housing/baggage allowance included) for a Category IV (no teaching license) be?

3.) How long do interviews usually last, and what are they like?

4.) If a school's interested in me would I interview with them too?

5.) Since September is fast approaching I wonder what kind of schools will still be looking. Bottom of the barrel? Can I say "no" to a school and hope for another offer?

Any advice/input appreciated. Thanks!

Have a look at http://www.emb.gov.hk

1.) Certificate of Service. I don't have one. My last (and only) teaching job screwed me over and I left. Don't think the director thinks he owes me any favors. I've heard the CS is mainly for calculating your pay, is that true?

Yes, it's true that the CS is needed for calculating salary. Without the CS they might give you the lowest salary.

2.) What would be the salary cap (housing/baggage allowance included) for a Category IV (no teaching license) be?

As far as I know, the special allowance is 12950 per month. That's to cover rent and living expense. It's seperate from salary.

3.) How long do interviews usually last, and what are they like?

About 45 mins to 1 hr. They do ask you about your past experience in teaching and what strategies would you employ in teaching and teaching techniques. If I'm not wrong, there's also a test at the end of the interview. A written composition to introduce yourself.

4.) If a school's interested in me would I interview with them too?
After the interview and if you've passed the interview with EMB, they'll then pass your information to the schools and if the schools are interested in you, they'll call you for a phone interview.

5.) Since September is fast approaching I wonder what kind of schools will still be looking. Bottom of the barrel? Can I say "no" to a school and hope for another offer?

This question, I can't really answer. I'm starting in Sept myself and I took the first school that interviewed me. Before the school called me for an interview, I did some checking and called a friend in HK to check about the school. And obviously I did like the school and didn't mind working with them when they called for an interview. After the phone interview i had to wait a couple of days or weeks before they comfirmed me.

Hope I answered your questions.

Thanks!

Yes, you helped me a lot. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to try and get my CS. I only have about 7 months experience so it couldn't have bumped me up that much. Some people are saying that without the CS there is no way I could get a job. The way I see it, teachers run into bad schools all the time, and with a grudge against you there's not much you can do. I'll just hope they are understanding and take my reference letter and my teaching strategies as proof that I did teach ESL for seven months. Oh yeah, one point of clarification. Is the test a written introduction, or is there a test and then a written intro on top of that?
Good luck at your school in September! I am already living in Hong Kong and it's a lot of fun, you're bound to love it!

It is a written test. When is your interview? Think during my interview, there were 3 persons but only 1 person that talk most of the time.

I should be arriving in mid Aug. I've been to HK about 3 times, love hk and the shopping!

PM me in you need more info...by the way, are you doing primary or secondary teaching

Hello. I hope that nobody will take offense to me posting this message here.

I am interested in applying for a NET position. I am a Singaporean Malay male and I have 6 years of experience teaching in a Singaporean primary school.

I am wondering if I am eligible to apply. I only have a Diploma in Education awarded by a local university and I am due to start undergraduate studies part-time next year.

I would appreciate it if somebody could help with my queries. Thank you.

[quote=steadyhands]Hello. I hope that nobody will take offense to me posting this message here...................

Hi Steadyhands,

I am a Sporean as well. I just started working as a NET about a month ago. Like you, I've got 6 years of working experience in a primary school in Spore. Hate to disappoint you, as far as I know, you do need a degree to work as a NET. But you could try. I just read on the NET recruitment website, that the minimum you need is a teacher's cert. Without a degree, there is point that you can't get beyond on the pay scale. Most of the other NETS that I know do have a minimum of a Bachelor degree. On top of that, at least a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I don't have that cert as yet. It is stipulated in my contract that I need to obtain that before I get the next degree. On yes, you do need to sound rather native as well, if you know what I mean

Hope this is helpful.
