| Canadian Taxes - Non-resident filing Section 217 return Any expat (ex-Canada) tried doing this - electing to file under Section 217 ? For 2005 tax year mailing deadline is June 30, 2006 (tomorrow). It's an option to claim some tax refund if your calculated tax on certain Canadian incomes (interest, RRSP payments, etc, but not rental) would, by filing a return be less than the usual 25% non-res witholding tax.
A month ago when I checked, the Canada Revenue Agency website on this started out simple but then started becoming rather convoluted (one form leading to another and interpretation booklets and schedules and and then some) including even a form to include declaration of spouse's worldwide income - that's when I thought it better to shelve it and let it be as I was too busy to spend oodles of time on it. Refund at stake is less than CAD 1000 and it's only for a single item (interest). Seems not worth the hassle - unless someone with experience tells me the return is actually a lot simpler than it sounds.
Anyone out there? Tks. |
