Sabah is definately good. There is also a big chinese restaurant across the street that does good dim sum. The sushi place next to K-bar is quite good too. There are also some good Ta Ta Chen's (I'm sure I spelled that wrong!) around the place too if you're looking for simple chinese food. I must admit, when I first arrived in Hong Kong I thought the food was awefull!! I starved for about a month. I was shocked when people told me they thought the food here was good. Now that all seems like a distant memory, I think it really helps to have people recommend some places, because for every good restaurant there seems to be a stack of bad ones.

Q is on Forbes Street,....round the corner from Smithfield and Davis st. Coolgirl, ever considered these options? *The Japanese restaurant just next to K1, on Cadogan St, *Greenland - Taiwan-style Chinese food, located on the corner of Holland and Belcher Sts. *The cool-looking spicy sechuan hot-pot restaurant, also on Holland St. *Yeh Lam Kwok, on Belcher's St...nice interior decor, and great set meals for under $60-70! *Chilli and Spice, at the Westwood mall on Belcher's *MIX Cafe - more like a local 'chacharnteng', but they have some Macanese options. *Golden Shangai Restaurant - further away on Queen's Road West. *Delhi Gate - yummy INDIAN!!! on Catchick St. ....and many more if you're willing to explore..

I totally agree with you all! I moved to HK in Feb and didnt want to be "All Expat" where I work, shop in central, go to LKF every weekend, belong to yachting/tennis/expat club. If you go to a place you want to mix with the locals. The locals here are all, great, very friendly, nice. I see there is some kind of coffee shop opening along the reach with the Indian Restaurant. There is also a new restaurant next to Pricerite. Every week I walk around there seems to be something new or maybe I am not opening my eyes! Does anyone know of any more new things opening or planned? The only thing I would like is a place that does massages for guys instead of popping into LKF. Also since I moved into the Merton in March, the volume or people going in and out of the Merton seems to have gone up big time! Taxi's know where it is now and wait outside! Hey The Merton is on the Map!!!!!!! I still think we should have a "MERTON MEETING" as I bump into people all the time and dont know who they are. Also I look down onto the sunbathing terrace and its always busy with Expats/Western Chinese and wonder who they are and what they do. Anyone interested?

A Merton meetup definately sounds good! Speaking of massage places, I saw one just the other day in Kennedy Town, it was not to far from the video game arcarde / pinball parlour, on one of the side-streets near the water. It was all dark and empty inside and looked kind of dodgy, but the sign said 'foot massage' so I assume it was legitimate (or clean as the local's say BTW, Max, I went to that Indian place Delhi-gate, but it sucked!! Although I must admit I'm not to fond of the Indian in Hong Kong. I don't know if it's just me, but I get the feeling they just add some tumeric to cream, heat it up in the microwave, pour it over rice and call it curry. It's so bland tasting and doesn't have any flavour. Maybe they've toned it down for the local pallet. I've had some great Indian in Australia and even better in Belgium when I was living there, but I'm struggling to find a decent Indian restaurant in Hong Kong. I'm looking for something spicy, with lots of flavour and not too much cream/butter. Any ideas? I did find a great Nann/Pakora stand in Mongkok the other day close to the Park-In center.

Good (and I mean REALLY good) Indian food is a difficult to get, but by no means completely unavailable. The only problem though, is that the GOOD food tends to come with equally 'GOOD' prices. On the Island, I can name a few places that serve up fine Indian cooking; Tandoor, Bombay Dreams, Jashan,.....even Veda (a bit pretentious, and new-ageish but good stuff). On the more higher end, you have the classic Viceroy. There are a few good ones in Kowloon (mostly TST) if you're willing to make the trek up there. Gaylord (i know, I know......the name..) is the oldest and priciest one around. |

Thanks Max, I'll definately check those places out. I used to go to this little indian/pakistani restaurant in Antwerp in the 'bad' neighbourhood. The chairs were plastic, and you often saw dodgy looking mafia types on the other tables but the food was excellent, and really cheap! Ah I miss that.

I'm glad to hear abt the proposed Merton meet... I am almost sure to attend... but wondering what's K1??? Reg Indian food, the Delhi Gate is pretty basic... the only thing which I like from there is tandoor/kabab which is ok'ish... The bread (Roti/Naan) sucks big time... Jashan, Tandoor and Jojo's Mess are some of the better Indian restaurants... but even they have toned down the flavor/spice a lot.... Can anyone tell where this dosa/south Indian outlet is in Central? Btw...Does it exist at all???
