Pet relocation companies

Hi all,

I've had three quotes for importing my cats to HK - ranging from HKD$2500 to HKD$5045 for the same service. To an extent I believe you get what you pay for, but on the other hand I don't want to be ripped off.

Can anyone recommend a particularly good HK based company, or indeed have bad stories about any?

Thanks

Jen

There are basically four recognized companies in HK: Aeropet, Wish You Were Here, Ferndale Kennels, and Export-a-Pet. I asked for quotes from all of them to import my dog, and there was a difference of HKD2000 between the cheapest and most expensive (also, same service).

I eventually decided to go with an international moving company. They appoint pet shippers to handle the export (from your home country) and import (into HK) aspects. The total cost for export and import is less than the import cost of the most expensive HK company.

Unfortunately, I haven't moved yet. So I can not relate the whole experience. I can only hope everything works out! (Good for you for taking your pet with you!)

we take care of dogs when people go on holidays and when they are newly arrived and looking for a flat or to side step the japan quaranteen...

anyway, we always recommend
George Yung from International Pet Travel. He's British Chinese, so communication is never a problem and he's a really nice guy.

I know that he moves dogs, for sure, but you can call him to ask about cats...

website is

and his mobile is 9135 5233

good luck with the move!

I would agree with carang, George was the assigned rep for our 3 cats who moved from Chicago to HK. He was excellent, and I would highly recommend his company. He was very attentive, and even commented on the unusual "lion" cut our long haired tabby was given at the boarding house. We used a company from the states out of Georgia, can't remember the name now, if you would like the contact info for the company state side, I will look it up, where are you moving from?
The cost was not the high end, or the low end, and I would recommend them wholeheartedly. They arrived safe and sound, and completely unphased by the whole thing.

I just imported my cat from Japan about 2 weeks ago, so here are my thoughts on everything.

1) Find a company in your home country to import your cat. They will give you a quotation and everything which includes (the paperwork and going through immigration in your country and the paperwork and import immigration into HK). The will also contact an agent in HK to do all of that for you.

2) Charges will differ from country to country but most companies will charge you (1) the charge for the export of your pet in your country + (2) the HK side will charge you (but, that is worked out between the 2 companies.

3) I was charged on the HK side 20,000 yen about $180 US and my agent in Japan contacted Export-A-Pet to do the work for me in HK

**NOTE**
If you contact Export-A-Pet directly...they want to charge you just for the HK side work 2,500 to 3,000 which is a lot more! On top of that you need to contract an agent in your home country to do the other work!

So...my suggestion would be to contact a company in your home country and get them to do everything!

Good luck!

diy or hire someone to export pet?

I plan on importing my dog from the US to HK myself. The requirements on the AFCD site don't seem that bad and my dog already has everything done that's required re: shots & microchip. I just need to have his vet fill out the paperwork and I would do the paperwork on the HK side. Seriously, am I being naive? Would you do it yourself? I don't want to hijack your thread but just wondering what your thoughts are on this.

Thanks.

We imported our dog here from the US by ourselves without taking on the extra expense of hiring a pet relocation company. It was a fairly easy process from beginning to end with only a little bit of trouble at the end when we got a little lost trying to find Cathay Pacific's cargo department at HK Airport. Other than that, everything else was fine! Our dog was happy and safe in the end and everyone was friendly and helpful in both countries.
