In my recent experience one can open a checking powervantage account with a just a passport (they did ask for a utility bill but were happy to sight it 'later'...)

Same here. Powervantage account with just a passport. I proferred additional overseas ID even though they didn't specifically ask for it. Didn't have to satisfy them as to why as setting up an HK account either, just had to put in $500 to the account up and running.

For what it's worth........

I opened up a HSBC PowerVantage account 3 weeks ago with just my UK Passport and a UK utility bill - no other questions asked. I received my ATM card, passcode, cheque book and telephone banking password there and then. Pretty efficient I'd say compared to most UK high st banks.

Good luck all. Cheers

I don't understand how you inferred that. I read it as being in Hong Kong...

A word of advice; if you try to purchase HSBC insurance products on-line your account needs to registered to your HKID. I originally opened mine when I only had my passport and they required me to visit a branch to set up the insurance (... I had them link my account to HKID at the same time). So I suppose there are advantages to having the account registered to the HKID.

How does a UK utility bill prove your address in Hong Kong?

DiscoBay, I asked the same question.....

at the time, but got a blank expression from the HSBC girl. I guess it's one of life's great mysteries?

I suppose that's good news and I will have to keep that in mind for newbies in town.
