Can you use HKBanks for Offshore Banking?

I mainly just need a bank account outside my country because the banks here(brazil) are too inneficient.
HK seems great, no patriot act, major banks are there so it seems that it will work.
I would just need credit/debit card and international wire transfers capability.
Interest earning would be nice but by no means a necessity. I wonder what I will need. It looks like I will have to go to HK and wont be able to open via mail, thats not a problem since I really want to know this terrific country.

I will bring my passport, credit card/bank statements and my goverment ID just in case they require it. I dont have a bank reference letter though, my bank wont provide me(specially in chinese lol). Which banks should I have a easier time opening? It looks like I would have problems with HSBC and they seem more restrict. I dont know anyone in hong kong so it would be a problem getting a referral. Anyway, I would appreciate suggestions
Regards,
Fernando

You might just be able to contact HSBC in your home country and they should be able to advice you on what would be needed. In many cases, if the local law allows you, they'll even open the Hong Kong based account for you from that country, or atleast help you process the paperwork.

HSBC or Citibank is probably the best one for you to work with.

I see no reason why your bank cannot provide you with a reference letter. This is normal ... You can get it translated to English if you need. No need to Chinese.

Believe me through HSBC its very likely it wont work. I cant even open an account on a branch here(I cant prove my income since I'm self-employed). But I wonder which HK banks I should have a easier time. There's got be smaller more 'desperate' banks there
