Mum's the word on William Hung's life
Singing 'idol's' mother carefully guides son's showbiz career

So it is no surprise that William Hung's big screen debut will be in a comedy about a mother who is "crazy about her son", who goes missing in Guangdong.

Hung wanted to reveal more about the film when he spoke to reporters yesterday but his mother, who only gives her name as Mrs Hung, tells him to stop as the film could lose its box-office appeal if he gives too much away.

"My mother is my manager, my father is my agent," Hung says as his mother sits nearby.

"They choose the jobs which give me a good image. Of course, I make the final decision."

The 21-year-old, who has become famous for being a reject on a US reality television talent show, was back in Hong Kong for the first time in more than 10 years yesterday.

He is on his way to Foshan on Wednesday to shoot a film in which veteran actress Nancy Sit Ka-yin will play the role of the mother.

Hung, who shot to fame for his cringe-makingly bad performance of Ricky Martin's She Bangs on American Idol, said he has never had a girlfriend. The top criterion for one would be that "she loves me", he said, adding that the woman who has loved and cared for him is his mother.

When asked how he was going to spend his first million dollars, Hung replied "wait a minute" and turned to his mother for advice.

Within earshot, his mother said "tell her you are going to use it for your kids and their education". Hung turned and gave the exact answer his mother had provided.

The young man with the not-so-golden voice grew up in Lik Yuen Estate, Sha Tin, and moved to the US when was 11. He is studying at UC Berkeley, in California.

He has loved karaoke since his childhood, and his favourite singer is Canto-pop star Leon Lai Ming. "I would love to have a concert at the Coliseum. It has been my dream for a long time," he said.

No mention was made of his plans for further study
