Overseas moving services... recommendations?

I'll be moving to Tokyo in the next couple of months, and don't plan on returning to HK for a few years. In all my previous moves, I've always managed to get rid of the big stuff and pack what I wanted in suitcases, shipped them in boxes via the post, etc. When I came to HK, I managed to bring almost everything I owned in only 5 suitcases and 4 large boxes.

But, now that I've acquired some decent furniture, books, books, and more books, and other junk I don't want to let go of, I have to consider a moving service. I've taken a look at the 15 listed on geoexpats "services" section, called 2 for quotes (Chunkie Movers and Prudential Int. Movers), and browsed the website of 2 other larger ones (Santa Fe and Schenker).

From the quotes, I'm looking at paying around $10000-12000, give or take some fees here and there, for door-to-door service. I'm sure this varies by country, but it sounds comparable to what some of my Japanese friends have told me what they paid moving to HK from Japan. For those of you that have experience with this, is this about right?

Cost issues aside, can anyone recommend international movers based on efficiency, reputation, honesty, etc, etc? For these things, I have no idea. Also, if it matters, I live in NT, thus my first inquiries to Chunkie and Prudential.

I'd greatly appreciate any info or advice you guys and gals can offer. Thanks.
L

Try Allied Pickford

We just moved from the US to Tokyo and used Allied Pickford. They packed and shipped our entire apartment in New York for about 10,000 USD. We found out that we are moving to Hong Kong now so very soon Allied Pickford will move our stuff to HK.
