| Think you may have got the wrong forum for this - 'Sport and Fitness'? But I asked the same question last year, and the answer I ended up with worked for me: cash. Went into my bank in London and took out a wad of notes, brought them with me, put them in my safe here, went into my bank in HK and opened a GBP account. They charged a fee for depositing more than a certain amount in a day (1000 GBP, I think) so I went in a couple of days running to do the deposit. The banks here may not be the best in the world, as far as retail over-the-counter stuff goes, but they're used to working in multiple currencies - Hong Kong is both a major world banking centre, and a pretty cosmopolitan city, so it doesn't phase them. It's probably fair to say that my Standard Chartered branch in Tsuen Wan doesn't get too many guys coming in with wads of 20 pound notes, but they handled it fine. Once that's done, it's pretty easy and efficient to change it into HKD either when you need it, or when you think the rate is favourable. Of course, if you don't have a bank here, it might make it a little more difficult. I brought my cash after I'd been here a couple of months and opened a local bank account, so I already had a relationship (particularly with my branch, who know me now) which made things smoother... |
