there are several criteria for the immigration department to reject or grant a working visa and most of it depends on the qualifications of course. but the most important check _above everything_ is whether local workforce can fill up this position as well. so one possibility to prove the contrary as the sponsoring company, are local job ads and several sample applications to show that they are not meeting the desired qualifications.

other supporting criteria are of course the salary, whether you are a degree holder or not etc. furthermore, it certainly helps if the sponsoring company can show that they are in a good financial standing, have hired several local employees, are existing for several years already, etc. while there are no real knock-out points (some companies for example have got only 1 local, but many expats), the most important reason for that is to show that the company is not a fake company just to create employment visas.

for technical and managerial positions i know 4-6 weeks as standard processing time as well. but don't forget that usually the 4-6 weeks start only after they have received ALL documents. so if your company has got no experience and has not done it with an agent, then the total processing time might be indeed longer. therefore the really exhaustive preparation of all required documents (better more than less) right from the beginning is the key for a processing without further delays.

usually the HKG immigration department is quite efficient (at least in comparison to some Western European countries). that's even in their mission statement: "We will be the foremost immigration service in the world in effectiveness and efficiency.". In the same mission statement they mention: "We will provide quality service without discrimination and treat each member of the public with respect, consideration and compassion, irrespective of disability, sex, marital status, pregnancy, family status, race, nationality and religion.". whether they really stick to it, is another question. but at least it's a fact that they have got something like that.

for the avoidance of doubts: i am NOT working for the immigration department

thanks connecta for sharing some useful info,
and yes, i personally agree that government here consider very effective and also responsive. i applied for my work visa since 27 April, and they keep asking my employer to send in more and more doc. almost everything about the company like past 3 months financial statment of the company, and then future 12 month profit and loss..etc. all together will have at least 100 pages doc. and until last week they still require my employer to submit other doc too.and i have been extended my visa every 2 weeks for 2 months already. I treat this as a positive news because if i am not qualify to get the permit.the would hv reject me and ask me to go back. just my thought, may be i am wrong....sigh..waiting waiting and waiting.

From what you're saying I see two reasons for the delay: (1) you actually mentioned you went here to look for a job!!! (you should have said you went here for holiday) (2) they actually doubt the capability of your company since they asked for statements - either that or your company didnt submit complete documents in the first place...

Race is not an issue. I dont know if being white would be easier, but being yellow was not an issue for me Got mine in 4 weeks if i remember correctly.

hi coolgirl,

how's life in hk?

I didn't mention to come here to look for job,
I only mentioned I came here to create business contact and travelling, and then i found myself i love the place then i only look for the job.

if u just say u come to hk as visitor to look for job. they will reject u right away.

but what actually happened to me is true, I didn't plan to come here to look for job at all the first time I arrive here in hk.

but my case is I have been here and the officer who handle my case even willing to extend my visa for me every 2 weeks for 2 months already. so I assume I have pass his required qualifications.
just that my sponsor haven't ....what a pain in the ass by just waiting like that.

if i got my work permit I will treat you a drink coolgal, coz so far u been very helpful in this forum and provide your opinion.

wish me luck
