Cats as hand luggage... Hi All, I am (hopefully) moving to HK this year, and this website is proving extremely useful! My question is this: I want to bring my cats with me to HK. The regulations require that they have to travel in the hold as cargo to be brought in. I cannot bear the thought of doing that and would much prefer to bring them in as handluggage (which is accepted on some airlines). I have heard that if you get written permission from AFCD you don't have to bring them in as cargo. Has anyone managed to do this? Any help is appreciated. Thanks Jen

I called the AFCD and they told me that my cat has to go as cargo! So I have decided to leave her here with a friend and while I am in HK looking for an apartment going to visit them in person and see what can be done, or if there is any work-around. When are you thinking of coming to HK? I will be moving to HK on July 3rd....

We don't have a date yet - it's like to be November-ish I think. I do hope we can be in before christmas. I've been looking at the airlines and they all insist that the cats would have to go in cargo for flights into hong kong - so even if we managed to get permission from AFCD, I doubt the airlines would bend the rule for us. You're really lucky to have a friend who can take your cat whilst you settle - I am in an absolute dilemma about whether to take our two or not. They like having a garden, and that won't be feasible out there. This is so hard Jen
