>> you automatically recieve it if you are married?

In very rare cases they have rejected visas where they figured that the person will not be able to support the spouse. Most of those have been obvious immigration scams.

Chill3 what field are you in?

Unless you have a skill thats hard to find in HK, it can be difficult to find a job here!

Have you thought about teaching? If you are a native english speaker and have a Bachelors Degree you may be able to work as a native english teacher ... schools usually will quite happily obtain your work visa for you.

how good is good?

chill3

It will really depend on how close to sounding like a native english speaker you sound! also i hate to say it but if you look european then you will probably have a better chance too.
i know of a couple of teachers who are not truly "native" speakers but are teaching in schools because teachers are pretty thin on the ground at the moment.

re native teachers generally it means you have grown up speaking english and have perhaps done your schooling in english (including your degree) i suppose ... anyone else got a better explanation? thats just my understanding based on what i had to produce for my work visa

if you would like to teach there's no harm in getting your cv out there and having a go ... you never know! specially if you're tutoring already
good luck!

Going as a dependant

I am in a similar situation. My husband has recently been transfered to HK and we are moving in July this year from the US. We''ll be there for about 3 years. Although I am still trying to work out what to do when I get there. I am getting a dependant visa. I do not know if It is possible to get your own work visa once you get to Hong Kong and are on a dependent visa? I am 27, have a International business degree and experience. do I have a chance?

I guess at 27, childless, I am not overly thrilled about not being able to work and wonder if there is any hope at all!!

Also, If when there I get a job, does the company have to sponsor my work visa? If so, do I have to give up my dependant visa?
I ask this because in case I stop working for any reason, I would like to stay there with my husband.

If you would like to start your own business - is there any one who has done it?

Quote from http://www.emigra.com.hk/HongKong/page80.php

"In an expected revamp of existing policy, the Director of Immigration lifted the restrictions on ability to work by the holders of Dependant visa in Hong Kong as of 15th May, 2006. This reinstated their automatic ability to work under the terms of their Dependant Visa consents.

The new policy applies to holders of Dependant Visas and is allowed to engage in any form of lawful activity under the immigration permissions granted to them.

All Dependant Visa holders are allowed to study without any express, additional visa permissions."
