Accounting PD & jobs

Hi everyone, I am a qualified CGA (Certified General Accountant) from Canada, worked Vancouver for about 10 years. Recently moved to HK, can anyone tell me where can I find good professional development courses to take around town. I tried my own CGA website in HK, sadly, they don't have much to offer.

Also, if i would like to check out HK job market, which headhunter or HR agency should I approached?

Comments from anyone will be appreciated!

Hey Sue,
I just moved to Hong kong 10 days ago but I had a friend who studied in Australia and currently working for an accounting firm, he's not making much (2yrs exp. $11k) I can surely talk to him to pick up some information.

Hi Raymond,

That would be wonderful, if you can talk to your friend and see if you can pass me some info regarding headhunters, PD courses around town...etc.

Thanks much!
Cheers

hey sue,
Not much a problem, I'll talk to him after the 5th when he finally got some time. He's usually a bit busy around the end and the beginning of the month.

I was in the same position sometime back. BTW, what visa are you on in HK? If you do have the permision to work here, explicitly let the employers/recruiters know about that. That might make a difference to your search and the success rate.

Nice to know people who used to or are in the same position I am in.....I don't ahve the visa permit problem...so luckily, that is one less thing to worry about. I found that being a CGA is of less an advantage in HK.... Most of the postings need CPA or CA.....qualification.

Even with a CA qualification, it's not all that simple. I am a CA and now, also studying to become a CPA....let's see how it goes for me. Luckily, even in my case, work permit isn't an issue. Are you taking up an additional qualification?

Also, try www.ambition.biz ...they are good for accounting jobs.

Thanks for the tip on the job website. I have heard of them, you are the second person who recommended them. Did you use them? Y

You are a CA and still have difficulty with job search. I am sure it is not going to be easy for me. Are you working and studying for your CPA at the same time? I am continuously taking PD courses to update myself, but currently not studying for any additional qualification. From the sound of things, it may be better if I study for additional qualification first.

It would be best registering as a member with a US State Society (e.g. CSCPA - California State CPA) thus taking the exam in US.

Qualifying as a member of a US state and becoming a member of AICPA (New York) would be much better. Also, be sure to take the extra step (and extra exams) to become a public practice member, which allows you to sign F/S and thus making youself more marketable.
