great to see someone learning catalan, esp in this part of the world. Guangdong and Cantonese is to China as Catalonia and Catalan is to Spain. Except that the linguistic distance between Cantonese and Mandarin is a lot larger than between Catalan and Spanish. And no, sadly I don't speak Catalan, but I did have a very good Catalan friend at college.

I've heard from some catalans before that catalan its somehow more similar to Portuguese than to spanish

Catalan is not a dialect of Spanish but an order language much more closely related to Italian and a little French. Just another romance language derived from Latin.

Hola que tal yo entiendo el catala ya que creci en valencia, pero no lo hablo, supongo que sabras que el valencià se parece mucho al catala.
Actualmente estoy viviendo en Hong Kong, siento decir que no hablo catalan, espero que encuentre a alguien con quien puedas practicar.
