Personally, I love singapore and think there is plenty there to do for a family although it depends on how long you go for, I wouldn't go there for a 2 week holiday for example.
For shopping, head to orchard road, there is everything imaginable there from high-end boutiques to cheap local malls.

I have stayed at Robertson quay hotel before, a bit on the budget side but clean and tidy and in a very good location near clarke quay, cost about 100 SGD for a double room. I saw a lot of families there. I also stayed in the berjaja duzton hotel in chinatown, but I wouldn't recommend it, it's very old and you can tell by the decore, the carpets are all dirty and stained throughout the place too.

Places to visit? Well, I guess you could check out sentosa island, that would be good for kids I think, although it is a little bit of a tourist trap.
There are bird parks and zoos which you can go to aswell, I think the main one is in jurong but I never went as the day I planned to go it was raining.

For historical stuff, I guess check out raffles and also go to the financial district and see the marina with the lions head.

Have fun

thanks!

thanks for the info JohnnyC...juz staying in Singapore for 5 days, i noticed that there are different areas in Singapore like Marina Bay, Orchard, Sentosa, Chinatown, Geylang....which area is the center of everything like for sightseeing and shopping etc...? most people say Marina Bay...?? I've checked out Hotels in that area and they're a bit expensive..didn't know a 3* hotel would cost $600 HK per night! I'm interested in doing some shopping as well don't know which is the best area for this..budget shopping nothing chic! been to bangkok and shopping there was awesome, do they have something like that in singapore?do they have some kind of night market or stalls somewhere to buy cheap jewelery/clothes etc...? As for the hotel, I would want to stay in the area where everything is accessible like the train/bus/shopping/restaurants...any more info would be great!

I have been to Singapore but it is boring to me... Perhaps I like shopping and it is not a place for shopping, to be honest.

Due to Singapore's lack of respect of people's basic human rights - I am now boycotting it. It's actually a nice place to visit if you don't mind big brother watching over you...the food is great, it's hot and sticky all year round and everyone speaks English...kind of.

not to dispute the comment on singapore, but i am surprise you came to hk which is a part of china... i think the violation is alot more severe here.

I have been to both Bali and Langkawi. If you like relaxing, Bali is better than Langkawi. If you concern about safety, then Langkawi should be better than Bali.
