All sorts of apartment advice needed from brilliant locals

Price? Central/Sheung Wan/Sai Ying Pun? Roommates? I'm mostly questions and few answers. Please help!

I'm moving to HK from Japan at the end of June and I'm looking for a place to live. What I'm most concerned about are these factors: fast and convenient access to Exchange Square in Central, not an ancient building, not the size of a shoebox (200 square feet? Inconceivable!) and not too expensive.

I'd like to get 1BR or 2BR apartment around 600 square feet and I'm open to sharing a 2BR or 3BR flat with someone too. If I live alone, my max budget is around $7000, but ideally I'd like to pay around $4500-5500. What kinds of places am I looking at in this price range, particularly in the Central/Sheung Wan/Sai Ying Pun area?

Bonuses for a place would include convenient access to a medium-sized supermarket, shopping area, and of course swimming pool and gym (if not in the apartment complex, then somewhere nearby).

Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. And if you're looking for a roommate in that area please contact me! I'm 25, female, Canadian, and friendly.

Apartments are small. Skip the roommate and get your own place. You probably can't afford Central. You can probably find a spot in Wan Chai.

Kennedy Town is a good bet. Cheaper places. Not on the MTR, but many busses and cheaper places. Check out http://www.gohome.com.hk/ for price ranges, and other useful info. 4500 to 5500 for 600 sq feet? Forget it unless you live in New Territories.

for your budget, it's nearly impossible to find a flat comply with you requirement....

Sai Yan Pun, Sheung Wan and Central

Relatively Higher rent, esp in central.......where it's impossible to rent a flat which fits your budget....
u don't have choice in Central...

Sheung Wan, it's okay for you to find a 300-450 sq feet flat which fits your budget...but don't think a swimming pool or gym provided, and the building condition in not that good....

Sai Yan Pun......you MAY find one with 450-550 sq. feet.......and if fortunately.....u MAY find one with a swim. pool or gym...........but the chance is very low

actaully..........what you want is impossible...

the average rate is $10-$14/sq. feet for a standard flat, without gym or swimming pool....

if you want to rent one which is near Central....the price would be much higher......

Thanks for the responses! They've been helpful in providing a better idea of what I'm looking at.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean a 600 square foot place for $4500-$5500 for the whole apartment - I realize that would be unrealistic. I meant that size for around $10000 with a roommate. But I guess the apartments are too small to share with someone?

What am I looking at in terms of size and newness for $6000-$7000 a month in Central/Sheung Wan/Sai Ying Pun? Kennedy Town sounds interesting as well - I've looked into that area a bit and it seems doable. Is it easily accessible from Exchange Square, though?

some Reference for you
time is average time and
it's not "net travelling time"

Central -> Central Exchange Square.
1-3mins

Sheung Wan / Wan Chai / Mid Level -> Central
3-6mins

Sai Yan Pun / Kennedy Town / Causeway Bay -> Central
8-12mins

Pok Fu Lam / Tin Hau / Fortress Hill -> Central
16-20 mins

North Point / Quarry Bay / TaikooShing -> Central
20-25 mins

Aberdeen/ Repluse Bay/ Chai Wan -> Central
25-40mins

6-7? Old and small. You'll do better in Wan Chai. Sure you want to live in a 600 sq ft place with a non-boyfriend/girlfriend? K Town is accessible via bus, taxi (cheap) or minibus.

With your budget, I suggested you to try Sai Wan or Wanchai.
