Fresh Grad - desparately seeking...

Hello all!

I am a fresh grad from the UK and will be moving to HK in the summer.

I am finding it very hard difficult to find job ads that I think I will be suitable for. I have 2 years of work experience in the UK but there are industrial placements rather than specialist employment. One year at an investment bank and another year at a UK gov dept.

Everything I have seen so far require 3-5 yr specific experience! But if no employer trains anybody, then how can anyone get the experience?

The situation is starting to stress me out and I am not even in HK yet!

Would anybody like to offer any advice or share your experience? Or just feel free to have a moan!

HF

Hey!

I'm in a very similar position to yourself, just not as 'fresh' as u! I'm in HK at the moment trying to find a job. The work experience u have seems to be pretty useful, compared to my basic office experience (which was looked down upon during a recent interview!). It's true a lot of the jobs here require a fair bit of experience, but i say be positive and confident of your skills and apply to the jobs u want regardless of experience required (those less than 3years )

Man it's tough finding a job!!

Thanks Wai

May I ask which industry you are applying/interested in?

At the moment i'm not particularly fussed about what industry to go into, but generally i've been applying to banking/finance/IT type of jobs. I'm looking for an officey type job i guess

How about u? u moved to hk yet?

I feel the same Wai. I am not fussed about which industry, I just want a job that can offer a potential solid career path/development. I studied (undergrad) Economics at York Uni.

I am still in the UK at the moment and I have been looking at jobs such as media sales and recruitment. Sales doesn't really appeal to me, but I hope it will give me the opportunity to get my foot in the door and work up.

It's not easy for our generation!

Just wondering, but why the desperate need to go to HK to start your career? Surely you'd be better getting on a graduate scheme with a firm in London and getting a couple of years experience before you look at going to HK, wouldn't you?

There's one thing i won't do and that's sales, especially in hong kong. There's a lot of opportunites in sales i kno, but i'm just not the type to sell things to people, i get tired explaining

I'm sure good things will happen once u get your foot in the door, tryna do the same thing myself. Just keep at it, be positive and you're efforts will eventually be rewarded!

Anyhoo, when u come over, don't forget to meet up for football!
