Question Using PS2 and XBox Games in HK in Germany

I am clueless when it comes to video games but I have been asked to buy some games for my nephew in Germany, whom I will visit later this summer. Can you give me some advice?
  • Do PS2 and XBox games bought in HK work on German machines?
(This may be a stupid question but is there such a thing as a region code with video games (like with DVDs) ?)
  • Are games bought here usually in English or do I have ask for a special non-Chinese version?
  • Are prices really much cheaper in HK compared to Europe?
  • Is there anything else I should know / look out for?

Sorry, I know these are a bit silly questions but I am completely new to the subject and want to make sure I don't disappoint my nephew by getting him games that don't work on his machine.

P.S.: title should have said 'from' HK but I can't edit that now.

Games are usually English or Japanese, only a few Chinese titles which are usually action RPGs which you can even find in seven eleven.

DVDs for south east asia are region 2 which is the same as Europe, but Japan uses NTSC and Europe uses a mix of PAL/SECAM, so that depends on your TV. Games depend on the system, you can easily order a modchip online when you are back in Germany and fix your consoles to play games from anywhere.

Retail prices are similar everywhere, price fixing ahoy. Imports can be incredibly expensive.

quick answer, dont buy games in HK for your nephew in Germany. 2 reasons - yes, games are region coded, and second, they are not less expensive in hk.

but if gaming stuff is a must, feel free to get him accessories. even though they are also unlikely to be cheaper here.

justshaun has pissed of a few people
you can play hk games on your germany console but you'll have to get your console modified.... modchipped... etc. you basically get a chip installed on the board and it allows you to play import games, etc. or you can get special packages like magic swap disc etc.. check lik-sang.com or ps2modchip.com or linker4u.com and check out what i mean.
